Issey Miyake A/W 1985 Kasuri Weave Ensemble

£3,800.00

From the Autumn Winter 1985 collection by Issey Miyake

A jacket and skirt ensemble in a groundbreaking textile created in collaboration with textile director Makiko Minagawa, Miyake developed a variation known as "Kumigasuri". They adapted traditional ikat by setting pre-dyed yarns onto industrial looms, allowing abstract, sweeping brushstroke graphics to emerge organically in the weave rather than being printed onto the surface.

The Issey Miyake Autumn/Winter 1985–1986 collection prominently featured a groundbreaking exploration of kasuri weave (traditional Japanese ikat dyeing and weaving), which became a major focal point in mid-80s fashion editorials.

A landmark editorial for this specific collection appeared on the cover and pages of Time Magazine (January 27, 1986). The iconic image featured Issey Miyake alongside a model wearing a different colourway of this cotton kasuri weave ensemble

Establishment of "Permanente": The overwhelming response to these custom, hyper-developed textiles in 1985 directly inspired Miyake to launch his ISSEY MIYAKE PERMANENTE line that same year. The line was dedicated to preserving, reproducing, and commercialising these complex, classic shapes and in-house fabric developments so they could be worn for a lifetime
